Final Second Catch Propels Vikings Over 49ers

Posted by Rick Stanton On September - 27 - 2009

The Vikings couldn’t have imagined an any better finish to the game. Brett Favre threw a bullet into the end zone to a reserve wide receiver who normally doesn’t see much action during the final seconds of the game for an ending that was classic Favre.

With two seconds to play Greg Lewis made a leaping catch to score a touchdown of 32 yards. Favre, who had been flattened on the play, watched while on his stomach as Minnesota stunned San Francisco on Sunday 27-24 to remain unbeaten.

Favre, in the first true home game he has played in with the Vikings, overcame a series of bad throws along with more hard hits done to his body that is nearly 40 years old to find his winning touch once more.

Favre said, it’s hard to remember all of them. This game is a pretty special one. Favre has 42 comebacks now in his career, coming back from deficits or ties in the fourth quarter.

It was confirmed by official review that the feet of Lewis had been inbounds. The sellout crowd of the Vikings went crazy.

Nate Clements, 49ers cornerback said, I have gone through some tough losses. Add this one to the list. We need to just keep chopping away.

Adrian Peterson of the Vikings rushed for 85 yards in 19 carries.

During the second half, there were three punts out of the first of the five series along with the first interception by Favre and one turnover due to downs. Minnesota (3-0) had three timeouts remaining and forced a punt. With 89 seconds left to play they received the ball on their 20 yard line.

Favre said, I didn’t say too much. I was thinking that we had blown our opportunities.

Not quite all.

With 12 seconds remaining, the last play unfolded. Favre stepped out in the pocket, then he slid by design over to his right in order to buy some time for the receivers to get into position. Instead of just throwing the ball up in desperation for grabs, Favre figured by getting up close on the line that he would be able to fire more of a line drive pass that would be harder to defend against.

Lewis watched Favre’s eyes and then broke the opposite way to find some room inside the end zone over close to the right corner. According to Favre he didn’t see who it was.

Lewis caught his very first Favre pass. On the drive Favre completed six passes. Lewis says he’s looking forward to his next one.

Lewis said, the Adrian, offensive line, and receivers, we were all fired up. Brett fell in too. He was fired up. He said, we will get this done. That’s the attitude we took out to the field.

This is precisely why Minnesota wanted Favre so desperately.

When Jared Allen, Vikings defensive end, was asked about he was thinking about when their offense was setting up on their last possession he said, just be Brett. One more time.

Favre went 24 out of 45 for a total of 201 yards passing along with two touchdowns. It was the most passes Favre has thrown in one game since he was with Green Bay in November 11, 2007 when the Packers defeated the Vikings. In that game he went 33 out of 46 for a total of 351 yard passing along with three touchdowns. Green Bay is up next to face Favre and the Vikings.

The Packers defense is definitely eager to apply pressure to one of their old teammates. The 49ers (2-1) applied plenty of blows to Favre. When Favre was asked about his health he said his neck, shoulders, left knee and and right foot all had aches.

Favre however was spry enough to be able to throw a pass inside his end zone, then sprint upfield and pass Bernard Berrian zig zagging across to block Patrick Willis, 49ers linebacker, on the catch and run 36 yard play.

The game wore Favre out, raising more questions about whether or not he will be able to finish the entire season. The Vikings, for now, will take his touch in the clutch.

Brad Childress, Vikings coach said, he has been in many, many of those situations before. It never hurts having a veteran like that on the field.

Until the very end of the game, Favre got outplayed by 49ers quarterback Shaun Hill, a former third stringer for Minnesota. Hill connected on two touchdown passes with Vernon Davis, tight end. The second touchdown was a pass of 20 yards over three defenders. It gave San Francisco the lead 24-20 mid fourth quarter.

The 49ers had two sacks on Favre and applied lots of pressure. Hill and Davis combined on seven pass completions for a total of 96 yards. San Francisco survived losing Frank Gore, their star running back, due to an injured ankle. They rallied and were on the verge of getting a win on the road.

The players were quite naturally devastated. However their coach Mike Singletary would hear nothing of it.

Singletary yelled at his team, there is no reason to be looking down at the floor. You didn’t steal something or do anything wrong. We will get better. We will get there. In the playoffs we will be seeing them again. Hold your heads up.

Gore, 49ers Rush Past Seahawks 23-10

Posted by Rick Stanton On September - 20 - 2009

Frank Gore was keeping a close watch up on the scoreboard while he was running like mad to make sure that no one would catch him before me made it into the end zone.

It wasn’t close at all.

Yes, I was looking, said Gore grinning. I was running all day long.

The spectacular afternoon for Gore re-established the 49ers running game single handedly.

Gore rushed for 207 yards in 16 carried and ran for touchdowns of 79 as well as 80 yards, his career best, as San Francisco defeated Seattle 23-10 and took an early lead in the NFC West.

Gore said, I said to myself to not look back. I said hey if they catch me, they catch me. I will just look ahead.

Gore, who during the first series went over the 21 yards rushing total for the 49ers in Week 1, almost made it to the franchise record of 212 yards that was established in 2006. However during the fourth quarter he had to leave the game when he sprained his right ankle. The sprain isn’t considered to be serious. Gore became just the second player in the history of the NFL to have running touchdowns of at least 79 yards during a game. He joined Barry Sanders who had touchdown runs of 82 and 80 yards October 12, 1997 versus Tampa Bay.

Gore, regarding joining the company of Sanders said, I’m happy about that. I didn’t know. In our division we are 2-0. We have proven to lots of people that we are improving.

Seattle (1-1) who was coming off their season opener where they defeated the Rams 28-0, suffered a large blow when Matt Hasselbeck, their starting quarterback, left right before halftime due to a rib injury after he has hit hard by Patrick Willis close to the goal line. Hasselbeck, after going 10 for 18 passing for a total of 97 yards with no touchdowns, did not return to the game.

Hasselbeck was transported to the hospital to get a CT scan and X-rays. The CT scan test results were inconclusive and X-ray results were negative. Hasselbeck was able to rejoin the team for the flight home.

Jim Mora, Seattle coach said, at this point it’s a bruised rib. He is doing a lot better. He is feeling more comfortable. At this point we think he will be ok, but that is very preliminary.

Gore posted only the third rushing game of 200 yards in the team’s history. September 24, 2000 Charlie Garner rushed for a total of 201 yards in Dallas. November 19, 2006 Gore rushed for 212 yards versus Seattle at Candlestick Park. On Sunday his 246 total yardage was his career high. Previously he had 238 total yards in the game versus Seattle in 2006.

Shaun Hill, 49ers quarterback said, I haven’t seen anything ever like that. He was really moving.

The 49ers got field goals of 42, 39 and 37 yards from Joe Nedney. The 49ers are off to their 2-0 start after coach Mike Singletary demanded that the players this week perform better and to find their identity in the running game. In Week 1 the 49ers defeated the defending NFC champion Cardinals in Arizona.

The defense of the 49ers was once again dominant this week. They handed Mora, former defensive coordinator of the 49ers, his first losing game since he took over coaching duties for Mike Holmgren in Seattle.

Singletary said, it’s too early for us to tell anything yet. It was ugly last week. It was ugly this week too, but I did love it.

The game was a lot different than Singletary’s debut last October at Candlestick. He replaced Mike Nolan as head coach after Nolan was fired. The 49ers lost to Seattle. During the game Singletary bench J.T. O’Sullivan, starting quarterback, and brought in Hill. At halftime Singletary pulled down his pants in order to make his point. He also sent Vernon Davis, volatile tight end, back to the locker room early when he was penalized for a personal foul.

In this game, Hill went 19 out of 26 for a total of 144 yards passing. He had no interceptions or touchdown passes and got sacked four times. Hills record at Candlestick as a starting quarterback went to 6-0 and his overall record as a starter in the NFL went to 9-3. He had an easy job on Sunday. Give Gore the ball.

In San Francisco’s victory over Arizona, Gore had only 30 yards rushing in 22 carries. In their previous four games with Seattle since Gore’s 2006 Pro Bowl season, he had averaged 76 yards versus the Seahawks. In the 49ers other 2006 game versus the Seahawks Gore rushed for 144 yards.

Aaron Curry, Seattle rookie linebacker said, it was just Gore being Gore. It’s just that simple. They gave the football to the right man. He is a guy who has your attention. It isn’t hard finding him. He runs very hard. Sometimes you can hear him grunting while he is running.

After he got hurt attempting to dive into the end zone, Hasselbeck was down on the ground for several minutes just 26 seconds before the end of the second quarter. Hasselbeck got stopped on the one yard line.

On the very next play Seneca Wallace, backup quarterback, came in and threw a touchdown pass of one yard to Julius Jones. That brought the Seahawks to within 13-10. For the game Wallace went 15 out of 27 for a total of 127 yards passing and one touchdown.

Ray McDonald got his second sack in two games. During the opening series he dropped Hasselbeck back for a loss of 7 yards with Seattle going three downs and out.

Niners Trump NFC Champion Cardinals in Opener

Posted by Rick Stanton On September - 13 - 2009

Arizona’s NFC championship banner hung freshly from the rafters of the stadium. However the offense that had powered the Cardinals to win it wasn’t on display too often.

On the other hand, the offense of the 49ers showed up enough to get the win.

During the second half on Sunday San Francisco went three downs and out in five out of their six possessions. However Shaun Hill was able to direct an 80 yard, 15 play masterful drive on their other possession. With 7:26 remaining Hill threw a touchdown pass of 3 yards over to Frank Gore to give San Francisco a 20-16 win over Arizona.

Hill said, it wasn’t really anything I said. Our whole unit was all saying, it’s time for us to go.

Arizona looked more like the team who had a preseason 0-4 record and not much like the team that won three games in the playoffs last year and then narrowly losing in the Super Bowl to Pittsburgh only a couple months ago. At least that didn’t on offense.

Kurt Warner said, we are just not meshing right now. Warner had two interceptions while facing a very fierce pass rush for most of the day. We couldn’t ever get in rhythm. We always seem to have something stopping us.

San Francisco, who under head coach Mike Singletary experienced a very brutal training camp, provided their coach with his first win in an opener since he took over for Mike Nolan who was fired after six games last season. The loss was the first for the Cardinals in two years against an NFC opponent.

Singletary said, to be able to come into their yard, with all they have accomplished, we knew it would be a huge challenge.

Out of the last eight meetings it was the seventh time that the final margin in a game between the teams had been settled by seven or less points.

The Cardinals rallied after trailing by 10 points to take the lead at 16-13 on a field goal of 44 yards by Neil Rackers with 14:52 remaining. However, San Francisco was able to regain control on their drive that ate up almost half of the fourth quarter.

Larry Fitzgerald of the Cardinals said, we are too goo of a team to have these types of performances.

Arizona was able to hold Gore to only 30 yards rushing on 22 carries. They also sacked Hill a total of four times. However the Cardinals had 12 penalties for a total of 82 yards. Their pass protection also broke down during crucial times in the game.

Ken Whisenhunt, Cardinals coach said, one thing I really want to say is you can’t have all those penalties and mistakes and still expect to win.

After San Francisco late fourth quarter was forced to punt while at their one yard line, Arizona had a first down on the 39 yard line of the 49ers.

However Arizona got a false start and then a holding penalty, pushing them back 15 yards. The Cardinals threat then ended when Justin Smith leveled Warner as he was attempting to pass on fourth down and 5 from the 33 yard line of the 49ers with 1:51 remaining.

Whisenhunt said, what I am upset about the most was getting the back during the fourth quarter into the plus territory, then going backwards 15 yards. That is horrible. It is unacceptable. It is something that will cause us to lose games. I told the team after the game that guys who make penalties will not play.

The Cardinals got the ball one more time, at the 46 yard line. However another fierce pass rush from Smith forced a fumble from Warner as the game was ending.

Hill went 18 for 31 passing for a total of 209 yards. He had no interceptions and one touchdown pass. Warner went 26 for 44 for a total of 288 yards passing. He threw two interceptions and one touchdown pass.

Tim Hightower of Arizona had 12 catches for 121 yards receiving. It was second most receptions in Cardinals history from a running back. Fitzgerald had six catches for 71 yards, while Anquan Boldin, playing with a sore hamstring, had one catch for five yards.

The Cardinals were playing without Steve Breaston, No. 3 receiver, due to a sprained knee cap.

During the second half, San Francisco went three downs and out in five of six possessions.

Their one drive however was huge.

Hill said, we moved those chains. We didn’t get any real big plays. We just kept executing and kept moving.

After Arizona scored 13 consecutive points and took the lead, Hill led his team down field. The 49ers converted four opportunities on third down. Two came on passes over to Issac Bruce. During the first half Bruce caught a pass of 50 yards.

The 49ers on third down and goal on the 3 yard line sent Gore out into the flats. Nobody followed him. Gore caught a short pass and was able to score without anyone near him.

Gore said, we made plays here and there. We won.
